Threading |
Choose the shortest possible bar, with the biggest possible diameter. The maximum diameter-to-length ratio, even for a tuned bar, is in the area of 1:7. For a solid steel bar it is most likely close to 1:3
To minimize deflection, use a single point V-profile insert and make the thread without forming the crest. This means the smallest diameter must be finished prior to threading.
Use modified flank infeed to get cutting conditions as close to conventional turning as possible. Use constant infeed series between 0.1 - 0.16 mm. Avoid spring passes. Modified flank infeed
Use a geometry with good and consistent chip control, like the "C" geometry (only to be used with modified flank infeed at 1° angle). If vibration problems occur, try increase the cutting speed. If that doesn't help, it could help to reduce the cutting speed. Yet another option is to change to an insert with a sharper cutting edge, like the "F" geometry (modified flank infeed at 3-5° angle). |

Silent Tools® is a definition of
tool holder made to reduce
vibrations due to a damper inside
the tool body and is a trade mark of
Teeness ASA. Damped boring bars are
designed for high productivity,
close tolerances and overhang beyond
4 x the bar diameter.
